The local Garden Club was started in the spring of 1994 by popular demand.  The club hosts bimonthly meetings as well as excursions to local points of interest.  The club is proud of the tremendous progress it has made refurbishing the Sarah May Downie Memorial Herb Garden at the corner of Flower and North Park.

Back in the 1950s and 60s Sarah May Downie Garden was a beautiful herb garden tended by local garden enthusiast Adeline Walker, now deceased.  Later the garden became a lonely dirt patch with a few straggly rose bushes and some broken concrete planters.  The only redeeming thing was the mature trees in the rear.

Following its inception in 1994, one of the first decisions of The Garden Club was to take on the project of renovating the garden.  This was also sponsored by the City of Santa Ana’s newly formed “adopt a park” program.  The Garden Club did not accomplish this renovation without the help and support of all the local neighborhood associations as well as contributions by many local businesses, neighbors, and the City.

What you see today is still a “work in progress”, with constant changes in the plantings as well as ongoing improvements.  The site is used for educational programs in plants and herbs for local groups, as well as social events, and annual work days at the park where local neighbors work together in sprucing up the garden.
